Shattered Dreams

Shattered Dreams is the English translation of Bülent Şenocak’s novel Düş Yollarda Kırıldı. Translated into English by Brendan Freely and Yelda Türedi, the book was published in 2014 by Create Space, a subsidiary of Amazon.

Based on true historical events, this novel addresses the social tensions experienced in the Ottoman geography during the late 19th century with a universal narrative language. While the events starting in Thessaloniki reveal the destructive impact of religion, identity, and power relations on individuals, the novel's second narrative line centers on the reckonings experienced by state officials and intellectuals during the process of the empire's collapse. Shattered Dreams is not merely a translation; it is a literary example of the effort to introduce a local historical narrative to international readers.
